I was just contacted, at the opening of the new Cromer MacMillan Cancer Centre, by my Chief of Staff who passed on the horrific news of Sir David Amess' murder.

Sir David was the sweetest, kindest man. We spoke together on debates about animals and animal welfare and that's where we bonded.

My thoughts and my condolences are very much with Sir David's family and all his colleagues and constituents at this very sad time.

Regardless of party, policies, or politics, all MPs and other elected representatives should be able to do their jobs without the threat of serious injury or worse. The tone of political discourse in this country needs to change, and the demonising of people whose views differ to our own needs to stop.
